Whew! I finally started working with PHP and MySQL about the middle of 2004, and I'm still struggling to get a handle on it. Now I'm being told I should upgrade to the latest versions of PHP and MySQL.

But I'm a little leery of upgrading when I'm in the middle of so many important projects. What if something goes wrong?

I'll be finished paying for my Dell computer in July 2004, when the warranty also runs out. So I need to start thinking about getting a new computer about then. I could very safely install the latest verions of PHP and MySQL on a second computer, then upgrade my current computer if all goes well. So, would I be missing much if I wait until next summer to upgrade to the latest PHP/MySQL?

Umm...i think you should wait till next summer! If the PHP/MYSQL you have now run smoothly, there's no reason in messing them up! Besides, you'll have time to learn some more about these services by next summer

I'd make sure your running php 4.3.9 as it fixed many security problems. I'm not sure about MySQL. If you aren't good at system administration maybe you would want to look into getting webhosting, or if you have multiple domains, perhaps a reseller account? Just an idea... I know we secure, update, and maintain our servers about 6 times daily at least.

Thanks, I already have a couple webhosts. I haven't even checked to see which versions they're running yet. I guess I can't upgrade my local programs if they haven't changed theirs, eh? :)

What do you mean you can't upgrade your local programs if they havent upgraded theirs? who cares what they are running? What does your server have to do with theirs?
